Apple Security Alert (SSL/TLS Exploit)

A severe security flaw has been discovered in versions of iOS and OS X.  This flaw can permit the circumvention of secure communications when using tools that rely on SSL/TLS communication.  This includes Apple’s Safari web browser,,,, and other applications that perform encrypted communications.

Apple has released patches for iOS 7 and OS X versions 10.7.5, 10.8.5, and 10.9.2.  Customers should apply these patches to affected systems as soon as possible.  Details can be found at these Apple Support pages:

OS X 10.9.2, 10.8.5, and 10.7.5 (including Server versions)

Please note that this vulnerability, while a serious one, requires the attacker to be on the same wired or wireless network as the targeted device.  Thus, an Apple device deployed on a trusted corporate LAN would need to be compromised from within.  At this point, there is no known attack that can exploit the problem on a device behind NAT or firewall.  However, use of Apple devices on guest or open networks should be avoided until the appropriate patches have been applied.  Mobile users should avoid the use of wireless networks in airports, cafes, and other untrusted networks.

The best write up available at this point is here:

Please note that those who found the exploit are generally accepted as white hats so they are not releasing the full details of the exploit to the public until Apple has patched their products.
